Question by : Why do so many people think that Savate is a ripoff of Muay Thai and other Asian martial arts?
So many people in Yahoo Answers and around the internet are saying Savate is notthing but a ripoff of Muay Thai,Karate and other Asian martial arts. They keep saying that the French stole the punching and kicking techniques of Asian martial arts.
BUT FIRST OF ALL,Savate’s punches are NOTTHING ASIAN BASED!All of savate’s punching techniques came from BOXING!
Second of all Savate’s kicks LOOK NOTTHING like Muay Thai’s kicks!Nor does it LOOK NOTHING LIKE KARATE kicks or the kicks of other martial arts!
Thirdly, the French and their ancestors already knew deadly kicking techniques long before they made contact with Asi!aAncient Roman historians record that in battle agains the Gauls(the French’ ancestors), Gauls would use very deadly Kicking techniques that was effective in fighting hand to hand combat against the Romans! In the Medieval combat manuals, would show portraits of Frankish(term refering to the medieval French) Knights doing kicking techniques that looked similar to Savate kicks!Even as late as the Renaissance Age,French combat manuals were still showing deadly kicking techniques similar to savate’s kicks!
So why are so many people bragging that is a Savate ripoff of numerous Asian martial arts, especially Muay Thai? The kicks of savate look notthing like those of Muay Thai or other Asian martial art!

dont take everything you hear on message board at face value. if everything you wrote is accurate then dont concern yourself with what someone on a message board is writing. if law enforcement officers, soliders, and martial artists say its useless then thats a bigger issue. also if acclaimed historians on indoeuropean or orential combat/martial arts say that savate is just a repackaging of another traditonal martial art then that is also a bigger issue.

Basically, it’s because of the same reason people rip into a bunch of other martial arts: because they really have no understanding of the art what-so-ever. How many times have you been on here and read people saying that xxx art is whack and is not effective. Then if you ask them have they ever studied the art or even witnessed the art first hand, the response you will get usually is “I saw it on you tube” or “I heard from my friend’s friend who studied a completely different at but fought someone who studied xxx art”. People will always have an opinion, but the sad part is that it is usually a poorly researched one.
If something works, wouldn’t more than one culture have figured it out without even coming in contact with each other? It’s that simple. If Savate was the first of the two to be popular, the story would be reversed and people would accuse muay thai of copying it.
Next thing people will say is that pankration is a rip off of bjj.
